DHARAMSHALA, May 26: Calling on the Chinese government to see the Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the solution to the longstanding issue of Tibet, President (Sikyong) Dr. Lobsang Sangay of Tibetan government in exile (officially known as Central Tibetan Administration) said on the final day of his Washington DC tour yesterday.

Speaking at an event organized by US think-tank Heritage Foundation, Sikyong said, “His Holiness the Dalai Lama is not an obstacle to the solution of Tibet. He is the solution.”

Seeking support for the Middle Way Approach, he stated, “If the Chinese government implement their own laws listed in the Constitution and minorities nationalities act, we could take that as genuine autonomy,” he said, “We do believe that the Tibetan cause would prevail.”

President Sangay also slammed the Chinese government for suppressing the right to religion of the Tibetan people and destroying religious landmarks and monasteries. He, however, said that Tibetans have foiled the ‘very objective of the invasion’ by reviving Buddhism in Tibet.

He further said, “Tibetans rebuild monasteries in Tibet and learned and reeducated themselves with the help of some of the exiles (who were) trained and educated monks and nuns.”

With an estimated 30,000 educated Tibetans going back to Tibet to revive the civilization, the 48-year-old leader said that Tibetans in Tibet are not just embracing Buddhism. The second and third generations are conscious of their identity.

On his first visit to the US national capital since the formation of the new government under President Donald Trump, the Tibetan president met with eight members of congress from both the parties during the visit.
