DHARAMSHALA, April 12: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama today arrived in Dharamshala after a successful 12-day tour of the Northeastern states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The octogenarian spiritual leader was received by the Prime Minister (Sikyong) Lobsang Sangay and Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel at the Gaggal Airport. Tibetans and well-wishers including school children stood on both sides of the road as he made his way to Theckchen Choeling.

On Monday, the last day in Tawang, the Buddhist leader gave an empowerment to the largely Buddhist population who in turn offered a long life offering to the Dalai Lama. In his public talk at Tawang monastery where he stayed after coming into exile in 1959, he spoke on how to create inner peace through study of Buddhist teachings.

The Dalai Lama’s itinerary in North-East India especially drew more censure from Beijing, partly because he visited Tawang which is claimed as their own as a part of occupied ‘Southern Tibet’ but also because the ruling Indian government under PM Modi has been proactive in what the Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay described as ‘closed door to open door’.

“Beijing will take further action to safeguard its territorial sovereignty,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang today said while criticizing the “provocative” statements made by the Tibetan leader and CM Pema Khandu. Khandu on April 5 had said that his state shared border with Tibet and not China.

“What India has done is violated the solemn commitment on Tibet-related issues and it also has negative impact on proper settlement of the territorial disputes between the two sides through negotiations," he said.

The Dalai Lama’s next scheduled visit is to Lahaul-Spiti region of Himachal Pradesh from May 12 to 25.
