DHARAMSHALA, MARCH 28: The Central Committee of Utsang at its 14th General Body Meeting called for unity amongst the Tibetan people of all three traditional provinces of Tibet, appealing Tibetans to take a collective responsibility to maintain harmony and unity as per the wishes of the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama. “Tibetans in Tibet are laying their hopes on us and since Utsang being the largest in terms of population in exile, it is particularly important on our part to work towards unity among all Tibetans,” said Dawa Tsering, President of Utsang Chokla.

Held every three years, opening function held at the Utsang Community hall in McLeod Ganj was attended by representatives of various non-governmental organizations and institutions in and around Dharamshala.

According to Jigme Jungney, Vice President of Utsang Cholka, the six-day meeting is expected to discuss and evaluate the organization’s achievements and future commitments to comply with the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, among others.

“For a unified Tibetan community, we must first have unity within the provinces of Tibet. So having a united Utsang would be of immense help in stepping towards our common goal,” he said at the event participated by around 100 people from 23 regional chapters with America and Switzerland chapters making their debut at the meeting.

Attending as the Chief Guest for the opening function held at was Acharya Yeshi Phuntsok, Deputy Speaker of the Tibetan parliament and a Member of Parliament from Utsang Province.

The Deputy Speaker said that the Tibetan people must make the people of the free world aware about the ‘actual past, present and future of Tibet’ and also seek their support based on ‘truth’.

“The classification based on three provinces has been there for ages with important historical significance. Hence it is important for everyone to respect it and to have a harmonious bond to work in tandem to raise awareness about Tibet in the world,” he said.

He also suggested that the regional chapters in different parts of the world including those in the western countries must also focus and put extra effort in raising the Tibet issue as much as possible.

The meeting will conclude on April 2.
