DHARAMSHALA/GAYA, JAN 5: The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the first day of discourse at the 34th Kalachakra Initiations emphasized on the need for his followers and devotees to be 21st century Buddhists on Thursday.

After the completion of celebratory Earth Rituals yesterday, the Dalai Lama in his teachings on Shantideva's A guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life and Kamalashila's Middling Stages of Meditation said that though the teachings of Buddha has spread throughout the world people have been taking it without much analysis into meanings and implementation.

“We are in the 21st century with the educational standards highly improved. So we are in a time where we need to check the reality of the teachings and the permission of it has been given by Buddha himself,” the Dalai Lama said while referring to the verse in which Buddha had mentioned the need to scrutinize his teachings.

The spiritual leader said that he was sitting on the throne because he was giving religious discourse. “Other than that we are all the same like the seven billion human beings, who wish happiness and despise sufferings.”

“Many scientists have proven that innate nature of a human being is compassion. Since we all have the seeds of compassion in us, like a plant we must nurture it by using our intelligence to differentiate the benefits of having compassion and disadvantages in its absence,” a hopeful Dalai Lama said.

The 81-year-old spiritual leader said that in today’s world developing a sense of oneness is very important since everyone would have to come together to make a better and peaceful world.

“Most of the problems these days are caused by human beings using its intelligence negatively and segregating on the basis of race, religion, caste and color. Due to this it has caused a lot of trouble,” he said, “Therefore, in order expand more interest on compassion we must advise not through religious teachings but by using scientific findings of its benefits.”

Earlier in the day, before the beginning of the teachings a group of Indian students of Maitreya School bestowed a handmade placard wishing him a happy 34th Kalachakra puja and also recited the Pankya Paramitra Sutra.
