Six Tibetans arrested, several assaulted for arriving late for public talk

By Tenzin Monlam

DHARAMSHALA, JAN 4: Six Tibetans were arrested and several others including women were assaulted for arriving late for a public health talk summoned by the local authorities of Karma Township of Chamdo Prefecture at Damdo village on December 28, reported RFA.

Around 20 Tibetans arrived late for the talk attended by the Head of the Township resulting in them severely beaten and detained by the armed police accompanying the officials.

“When some of the local Tibetans arrived late for the meeting, the officials and police savagely beat them and detained six of them,” a source said, “Many of them were rushed to hospital, and many others had to be carried to their homes.”

The news came out late due to the communication clampdown imposed in the region. The six Tibetans are currently detained in Chamdo County Detention Center.

The source also added that those who tried to pacify the situation were also beaten up.

Another source added several women in attendance were also assaulted after they tried to appeal to the officials.

Consequently, the police and the local officials raided houses and questioned those who were found at their homes.

“The officials and police of Karma Township are uneducated and corrupt, and they misuse government funds for their own benefit,” a third source said, adding that Tibetans are ‘not allowed to speak freely’ when higher-level officials come to inspect about government programs in the region.

“Damdo village itself has never received any government assistance,” he said.
