DHARAMSHALA, Dec. 8: A Tibetan has reportedly self immolated today in Machu County in Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province today. A video that has surfaced on social media sites sh ow a man in flames lying on the ground. Posted by one Lhase Sonam on Facebook, he wrote that the incident took place around 5 pm local time today.

The video of the unidentified person taken most probably from a mobile device show a man lying in flames on the side of a street. People are seen passing by muttering prayers while a small kid is seen looking at the burning body from a close proximity.

There are no further details currently available as to who the man is, or whether he is currently alive or dead.

The case marks the 146th Tibetan to self immolate since 2009.

Self immolation has been taken up as a form of peaceful protest by Tibetans against Chinese colonial rule. Majority of the self immolators have called for the return of exiled Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and for Tibet’s freedom.
