Tibetan teacher released from prison in feeble condition

DHARAMSHALA, Sept 14: A Tibetan man has reportedly been released from the notorious Mianyang near Chengdu, the provincial capital of the Sichuan.

Jamyang Kunkhen, 43, was reported to have been released in “poor health and with physical deformities,” according to Dharamshala based Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy. He was released on August 21, 2016, in extremely frail physical condition, a source told TCHRD.

A middle school teacher and musician, Kunkhen was detained on August 22, 2007 in connection with protests carried out against the arbitrary detention of Tibetan nomad Runggye Adrak. “His eyesight and hearing failing and lips gnarled. His waning vision could escalate into blindness. In prison, he suffered a stroke for which he did not receive proper medical treatment resulting in a pronounced contortion of his lips,” TCHRD reported.

He was sentenced to nine years in prison on Nov 20 November 2007 by the Kardze Intermediate People’s Court. Adruk Lopoe, nephew of Runggye Adrak, and a nomad named Lothok were sentenced to ten and three years respectively by the same court that day on charges of espionage. Later Kunkhen and Lopoe were additionally charged with inciting separatism by “writing and posting secessionist flyers”.

TCHRD fears that Kunkhen who must serve four years' deprivation of political rights after his release could face intrusive surveillance norms from the authorities under the pretext and that it may hinder his obtaining treatment.

Following an unprecedented form of protest by Rungye Adrak, a 52 year old commoner and nomad in August, 2007 during a horse racing festival in Lithang County, Chinese officials cracked down on Tibetans in the area. Subsequently, Kunkhen was arrested during a raid and was caught with possession of a video camera. Authorities alleged that he was taking pictures and sending them to overseas organizations.
