DHARAMSHALA, Sept 12: The first Tibetan to self immolate starting the unparallel string of self immolations for the Tibetan cause since 2009, Lobsang Tashi, also known as Tapey, has reportedly been put into solitary confinement in his prison in Sichuan.

Radio Free Asia reported that an incident on August 20 in the prison where Tapey is serving his sentence resulted in the Tibetan monk being thrown in solitary confinement for three months as punishment.

Tapey was reportedly confronted by prison guards while he was watching television. The prison guards complained to him that he was watching another channel during the regulated time to watch the government news channel, according to a source cited by RFA. When Tapey pointed out that he still had sometime before the regulated time to watch the news, the guards pushed him and were involved in a skirmish.

Tapey and another Tibetan, Kunchok Lodoe, who was also involved in the incident, were then chained and thrown into separate solitary confinement cells, the source added. Incidents of discrimination towards Tibetan prisoners and especially political prisoners is not new in Chinese run prisons in Tibet.

Tapey, a monk of Kirti Monastary in Ngaba County, self-immolated on Feb 27, 2009. 145 Tibetans have set their bodies ablaze since then in protest against China.
