DHARAMSHALA, July 26: The Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama who arrived in Leh, Ladakh, on Monday will be on retreat and rest for two weeks until August 12.

The Tibetan leader who recently turned 81 will spend the two weeks at his place at Shiwai Gatsel near Leh, following which he is scheduled to give a teaching on Atisha's Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment (jangchup lamdron) and Nagarjuna's Commentary on Bodhicitta (jangchup semdrel) at Thiksey Monastery. The following day, on August 13, His Holiness will confer a long life empowerment (tsewang) and be offered a long life prayer at the same venue.

The Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama yesterday announced that he would be taking two week’s rest without any engagement during the two weeks.

The spiritual leader met a group of Ladakhi students in Jammu. Ganden Tri Rinpoche, Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche, dignitaries of the local government and leaders of the Buddhist and Muslim communities were present to greet and receive the Dalai Lama at Kushok Bakula Airport.

The 81-year old leader left Dharamshala yesterday early morning and upon his safe arrival in Shewatsel Phodrang, His Holiness’ official residence in Ladakh, he met with lamas, local civilian leaders, religious and community leaders and police.

A traditional ‘mendel tensum’ offering was offered to the Dalai Lama by Ganden Tri Rinpoche, the President of the Ladakh Buddhist Association and the local Tibetan Settlement Officer.

In his address to the gathering, he stated that efforts should be made to introduce a curriculum based on secular ethics by the end of this year. He also urged the local leaders to consider implementing the same in the local schools in Ladakh.

On August 19 and 20, His Holiness will give a teachings on Shantideva's A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (Chodjug) at Shiwaitsel Teaching Ground and confer the Avalokiteshhvera Initiation (Chenrezig ki Wang) the following day.
