‘Fake Panchen’ to give 'Kalachakra' initiation
[Saturday, July 16, 2016 18:34]
By Tenzin Dharpo

DHARAMSHALA, July 16: The Chinese appointed Panchen Lama Gyaltsen Norbu regarded as the ‘fake Panchen’ by most Tibetans is set to give the foremost Buddhist teaching, the Kalachakra initiation or the ‘wheel of time’ teachings next week in Tashi Lhunpo monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lamas in Shigatse, Tibet.

The Tashi Lhunpo monastery and the Buddhist association of Xigaze jointly made the announcement of the event to be held from July 21-24, according to Xinhua.

The report published by the state run news agency coaxed to establish the Chinese Panchen to give a teaching of such magnitude. It mentioned, “The Panchen Lama has become an accomplished Buddhist leader, who has given head-touching blessings to 1.5 million Buddhists.”

It further mentioned, “No such service has been done in Tibet in the past 50 years.” Since the last time the Dalai Lama gave the Due-Khor-Wang-Chen (Kalachakra) teachings in Tibet back in 1956, 33 editions of the religious event has been held outside India where Tibetans from Tibet come to be a part, even at the risk of persecution while returning back to Tibet.

The preparation for the scheduled event to be held at the summer residence of the Panchen Lamas in Shigatse are done in earnest with a 200 square meter altar covered by a yellow silk cloth embroidered with auspicious Tibetan designs and a large LED screen among others, Xinhua stated.

Activist and a Tibetan member of parliament Dorjee Tseten said that this shows China’s intensification of its persecution of Tibetans’ religious freedom. “It has now become all the more important for us to intensify our campaign for the welfare of Gendun Choekyi Nyima. The authorities have reportedly made it mandatory for each household to send two members to the religious congregation which for Beijing is not more than a show of political clout. China trying to force a religious congregation onto Tibetans shows that its meddling in Tibetan spirituality has failed miserably,” said Dorjee.

Gyaltsen Norbu who will preside over the proceedings was handpicked by the Chinese government over Gendun Choekyi Nyima, a six-year old boy recognized by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama in 1995. Norbu currently serves as the Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the country's top political advisory body.
