DHARAMSHALA, June 16: The Tibetan Prime Minister (Sikyong) Dr. Lobsang Sangay received a citation from the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for the democratic accomplishment of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA).

“I feel fortunate to have received this honor on behalf of the CTA in the presence of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. It is an honor to head the democratic institution envisioned by His Holiness,” Sikyong said after receiving the honor, a symbol of democratic solidarity of the organization from Martin Frost, Chairman of the Board of Directors, NED.

Trulku Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, who died in a Chinese prison under mysterious circumstances last year, was also posthumously awarded the Democracy Service Medal in Washington on Wednesday.

Geshe Jamyang Nyima, a relative of Trulku, accepted the Democracy Service Medal for late philanthropist, who passed away on July 12, 2015 in Chuandong prison in Chengdu reportedly due to poisoning.

“Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was a man who was fiercely loyal to His Holiness the Dalai Lama and devoutly followed His Holiness’s principles of nonviolent action and public service. For this reason, he was arrested by Chinese authorities in 2002 under false charges,” Geshe Jamyang said.

He thanked the organization for recognizing his contributions and for honoring the philanthropist Lama who spent over 13 years in Chinese prison. He also appreciated the timely recognition as his first death anniversary approaches near.

“On behalf of his family and his followers, I express my deepest gratitude. This award is not only a recognition of Rinpoche alone, but a tribute to all those Tibetans who languish in Chinese prisons for seeking their freedom and human rights,” he said.

NED is a US congress funded non-profit organization created to strengthen democratic institutions around the world.

After the award ceremony PM Sangay met dignitaries and senior officials of US governmental and non-governmental organizations.
