DHARAMSHALA, June 8: In solidarity with the Tibetans protesting against the illegal mining activities in Amchok in Sichuan Province, four Tibetan NGOs today carried out a peace march from the Main square till Tsuglakhang here in Dharamshala on Wednesday.

More than 2000 local Tibetans have reportedly gathered around the sacred mountain Gong-Ngon La Ri in Amchok town to participate in the peaceful protest against China’s illegal gold ore mining in the region.

“The destruction and extraction of Tibet’s natural environment especially in sacred mountains have pricked the Tibetans in their heart. We vigorously prohibit and challenge the Chinese government’s illegal extraction,” said Wangden Kyab, President, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress while extending his solidarity.

Co-organizers, SFT (India), Tibetan Women’s Association (TWA) and Guchusum also screened a compilation of all the video clips of the protest sent from Tibet.

Kyab added that the news of such vigils of solidarity here in exile would definitely encourage Amchok protests, which is currently in its ninth day.

The organizers also said that the Chinese-owned mining companies have accelerated extraction of minerals in the last two decades. Tibetans inside Tibet have time and again protested these operations and have faced severe backlashes.

Dolma Yangchen, President of TWA, said that it is the duty of Tibetans in exile to show support and solidarity towards those inside Tibet who are protesting against the Chinese security forces at gunpoint.

Earlier in the day, the Tibetan Prime Minister Dr. Lobsang Sangay condemned the illegal mining activities and the violent suppression of peaceful Tibetan protestors in Amchok and Minyak.
