Tibetans vote in final election for settlement officer

DHARAMSHALA, June 6: The Tibetan exiles here voted in the final round of elections for the Tibetan Settlement officer (TSO) in ten different polling stations in and around Dharamshala, home for the Tibetan leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile (known officially as CTA).

Also known as the ‘Dedhoen’, TSO functions as the representative of the department of home for the local Tibetans. The results will be announced in two days.
With three candidates running for the post in the final elections, the preliminary round on May 25 saw Dawa Rinchen lead with 746 votes against his two fellow candidates in the final, Thupten Jigmey (126) and Tashi Dorjee (22).

“The TSO should be able fulfill his duties earnestly and should be able to spend time in solving educational, health, financial problems of the needy,” the interim TSO Tsering Lhamo told Phayul.

She said that they had expected around 2000 voters during the preliminaries. However, 1064 votes were cast in the preliminaries.

The new TSO of Dharamshala will hold the office for tenure of three years. Dharamshala Tibetan Settlement Office’s jurisdiction stretches from TCV upper Dharamshala to Gopalpur area where the other TCV School is the prime Tibetan inhabited location.

The Tibetan welfare office in McLeod Ganj was established in 1967 to look after the socio-economic welfare of the Tibetan refugees in and around Dharamshala.

Although there are no Tibetan settlements in Dharamshala, Tibetans have been living in the area ever since the Tibetan leader shifted here from Mussoorie in April 1960.
