Teenage Tibetan self immolator succumbs to burns

DHARAMSHALA, March 4: In an unfortunate turn of event, the 16-year old, Tibetan student who self-immolated on February 29 passed away on Thursday evening at the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi.

Dorjee Tsering, a student of the Tibetan Homes Foundation school Mussoorie, set himself ablaze at the Old-age Home in Doegu-Yugyalling Tibetan settlement in Herbertpur near Dehradun, sustaining 95 percent burns.

According to a source, hoards of Tibetans gathered at the hospital premises to pay their last respects to the deceased teenager. The post death ceremony to put Khatak (white ceremonial scarf) over the body will begin around 2 p.m. today. Tibetans from all over the world have also poured in their prayers and solidarity through social media.

A Tibetan resident of Delhi told Phayul that hundreds of Tibetans gathered at the hospital pleaded authorities not to perform the post mortem formalities and requested the body be handed over to his parents. “The Tibetan astrological calculations for the date of the last rites fell on Sunday. The remains will most likely be taken to Dharamshala for cremation,” he added.

Dorjee succumbed to the burn injuries last night as his friends from his school waited in anxiety.

“The reason I resort to burning myself like a choemey (Butter lamp) is because Tibet was occupied by China since 1959 and I have always felt like I needed to do something for the Tibetan cause. Yesterday, I felt as if burning myself up was the only resort left for me,” Dorjee said in his last video testimonial immediately after reaching the hospital.
