DHARAMSHALA, January 28: A series of Tibetan language classes, apparently approved by the state and taught by university-affiliated instructors were carried the Tibetan majority county in Sichuan Province, RFA’s Tibetan service reported.

“The classes were held over the winter school vacation and pulled in around 200 students in Tawu County in the Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture,” Geshe Yarma Tsering, a monk of exiled based Drepung monastery told the RFA.

According to Tsering, the students based on their proficiency were divided into four levels – beginner, intermediate, dialectical and advance.

“The local Tibetan students in Tawu warmly embraced this crash course and were very attentive during the teachings,” Tsering said, adding that the series of intensive classes was also well received by students’ parents.

Tawu Gyaltse, a student at the Northwest University for Nationalities in Lanzhou, and his two friends made it possible to carry out the 20-days winter course in Tawu, which had reported several self immolations by Tibetans in the past.

Tsering also said that prizes were awarded to the top performer at the closing ceremony presided over by Geshe Paljor, Schoolmaster of Tawu Nyatso Monastery.

“Teaching of the Tibetan language should be promoted and strengthened through systematic planning,” Gyaltsen said.
