DHARAMSHALA, Jan. 13: A Tibetan girl studying in SRM University has won gold medal for excellence in Mathematics. Tenzin Yullo has topped her batch of B.Sc. in Mathematics at the SRM University, a deemed university with affiliation to Madras university, Chennai.

A math enthusiast and drawn to riddling out complex formula’s from a young age, Yullo sees the subject as “an existential part of her” unlike most Tibetan youth. “Math for me is a constant source of euphoria when you solve an equation. It’s that personalized supply of triumph in everyday life,” she told Phayul.

Currently taking a sabbatical from her further studies, Tenzin teaches math at TCV Chauntra School. While teaching there she observed Tibetan students to be lacking consistency while pursuing the subject which she feels is the reason for small number of mathematicians in the Tibetan exile community.

“Unlike literature, mathematics is a build-up kind of a theme where what you learn in early standards become the building blocks later. Hence when a student is unclear of the basics, it is difficult to grasp what is being taught later.”

In the Tibetan community, the relative disinterest towards math comes from a collective environment of viewing the subject as difficult or seeming beyond the reach of a Tibetan mind, Yullo opines. “I recall people saying that math is not in Tibetan genes, which is completely untrue. When you show interest and a required patience, anyone can achieve success,” she adds.

Tenzin plans to pursue further studies by pursuing either PH.D in mathematics.
