Future ‘Tibetan Rocket Scientist’ honored with highest DoE scholarship

DHARAMSHALA, October 8: A Tibetan student studying B.Tech Aerospace Engineering at the Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science in Chennai became the first winner of the Department of Education’s New Incentivized Scholarship of hundred thousand Rupees.

Tsering was awarded one Lakh rupee scholarship by the Tibetan PM Lobsang Sangay at a media event Thursday for his outstanding performance of 97.9 percent in his first year of engineering studies.

Jigme said, “From an early age I had this fascination for rockets boosters, launch vehicles and missiles. When I was in ninth standard drones attracted me. Since then I had this goal of studying either aeronautical or aerospace engineering.”

Introducing Jigme Tsering as ‘Tibetan rocket scientist’ the Tibetan Prime Minister (Sikyong lauded Jigme’s achievement. “He and his team’s drone project received the first prize in the institute. The special feature of his drone is that in case of malfunction, the drone returns to the place from where it took off.”

Jigme got through to his institute after scoring 83.4 percent in his XII Board exam and a good JEE Main score. He now aims to trade the drone, “There are potential in the drone market especially in aerial photography for wildlife photographers, wedding video cameramen, film industry and journalists as well.”

Jigme aims to build the trainer aircraft with his team, which is his top priority and after completing his B.Tech, he hopes to study rocket science.

Hailing from a poor family of five - Parents, one sister and one brother, his parents took a loan of six lakh rupees for his admission. “With the profit we make after selling the trainer aircraft, firstly I would repay all the debts my parents took for me.”

His message for all the aspiring student was “learn with passion. If you learn with passion, learning will be fun and more productive.”

Jigme is also eligible for the Sikyong Professional Scholarship Program, a joint program of DoE and Tibet Fund, which provides upto 3 lakh rupees per student through its scholarship scheme.

He had previously studied at Sambhota Tibetan School till eighth standard, after that he joined CST Darjeeling and for higher secondary school he joined CST Mussorie.

The Education Minister (kalon) Ngodup Tsering also congratulated him for his excellent performance and looked forward to more Tibetan students emulating him.
