DHARAMSHALA, September 16: The Chinese authorities have arrested a Tibetan woman after she carried out a solo protest on September 13 in Ngaba County of Sichuan Province, the fifth solo protest by a Tibetan against the Chinese rule in less than two weeks.

Dekyi Dolma, 22, took the streets of the town calling for an end to oppressive Chinese policies in the region, reported the RFA’s Tibetan Service.

“She carried on with her protest with full knowledge of the presence of huge security personnel in the vicinity. It didn’t take very long before the police subdued and apprehended her,” the RFA quoted a source as saying.

According to another source, Dolma got the support of several by-standing Tibetans for her act of defiance. “There were many Tibetans nearby during her protest who expressed their support and anger over the police for manhandling a peaceful protestor,” added the source.

In the restive Ngaba town, authorities have placed security restrictions following the four separate solo protests carried out by Tibetan monks belonging to Kirti Monastery this month.

Lobsang Kalsang (19), Jamphel Gyatso (21), Adrak (20) and Lobsang (22) of Kirti Monastery were arrested in separate incidents of solo protests this month.

All communications lines including Internet access in the whole of Ngaba County have been cut off since 10 September, making it difficult to acquire information.

Moreover, armed police have been stationed at every intersection, and additional police vehicles have been deployed to monitor the town and the peoples’ activities, the source said.

Ngaba town is a hotbed for protests against the Chinese regime and self immolation protests since 2009.
