TWA concludes leadership training for Tibetan women

DHARAMSHALA, January 2: The 4th Tibetan Women’s Advanced Leadership Training concluded on Tuesday at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. 38 Tibetan women from across India converged in the Indian capital from December 25 to 31 to attend seven days of rigorous training. With an aim to help young Tibetan women take higher leadership roles and women representation in the Tibetan community, the annual training was organized by the Tibetan Women’s Association, one of the largest NGOs of the Tibetan Diaspora.

“The training designed to empower Tibetan women on the leadership front focuses on bolstering female representation in the political and social arena of the exile Diaspora,” said Tashi Dolma, President of TWA.

Former union minister and incumbent MP Mani Shankar iyar, Alana Gomei, activist and founder of Burma Centre in Delhi; Souzeina Mushtaq, Journalist and writer from Kashmir; Lynda O Lepcha, HR expert; Dhardon Sharling, Tibetan MP, and Jaya Iyer, Professional leadership trainer were among the key speakers and trainers.

A panel discussion titled ‘Role of Women in Peace-building, Reconciliation and ensuring Accountability,’ marked the culmination of the training organized by Tibetan Women’s Association.

The training covered areas such as critical thinking, personal effectiveness, communications strategy, social media and leadership, leading self and others, leadership strategy and execution. The outbound training included field trips to riot affected regions in UP’s Muzaffarnagar district, covering stories in real-life settings, lobbying Indian leaders, participation in NDTV debate and an exclusive panel discussion with famed Indian speakers.

“This year we focused more on strategies including strategic communications and leadership strategy and execution,” said Nyima Lhamo, General Secretary of TWA.

Tenzin Lhadon, M.Phil student at JNU said, “I think this is one program every Tibetan woman should be a part of, once in her lifetime.”

Nyima Choezom, executive member of Tibetan Youth Congress said, “TWA’s leadership program is intense and challenging as it sets out to mold us, young women as future leaders.”
