China to build 7th airport in Tibet, start operations of the 6th
Phayul[Tuesday, September 10, 2013 23:49]
DHARAMSALA, September 10: China will start operations at a newly constructed airport in Kardze in Tibet's Sichuan province from September 16, 2012.

The world's highest civilian airport will, officials said today, "drastically cut the travel time between the county and the provincial capital of Chengdu from two days by bus to 65 minutes by air", according to the Kardze tourism bureau.

Located at 4,411 metres above sea level, the airport beats the current record held by Bangda Airport in Tibet at 4,334 metres.

It is the sixth airport in Tibet and will initially operate a daily flights to Chengdu.

The cost of a one-way ticket will be around 1,600 yuan (USD 259), state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Meanwhile, China yesterday announced its plans to build a seventh airport in the Tibet to "improve the infrastructure on the plateau."

Construction will start later this year on the new airport in Dawu Township, seat of Golog Tibetan autonomous prefectural government in Qinghai Province, state run media reported.

The state run media claims that the airport after completion will have the capacity to handle 80,000 passengers and 200 tonnes of cargo per year Airbus 319 and Boeing 737-700 aircrafts.

China's rapid development of air infrastructure in Tibet coupled with rail and road have raised concerns for the Indian government which often comes under criticism for numerous Chinese incursions over its border.
