DHARAMSALA, September 10: His Holiness the Dala Lama has sent his congratulations to Australian Prime Minister-Elect Tony Abbott on Sunday. The Tibetan leader who is in Latvia on a ten day Europe tour wished Abbot success in "meeting the challenges in leading Australia forward."

The Dalai Lama wrote that he has been overwhelmed by "the warmth and friendship shown to him by Australians of all walks of life during his many visits to Australia since 1982." He added that he was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the Australian people he met towards his efforts to promote human values and inter-religious harmony.

Abbott met the Tibetan leader during the latter's 2009 visit to Australia as the leader of the opposition.
