DHARAMSHALA, January 28: Protests against Chinese rule in Tibet continue to simmer with reports of a solitary protest by a young Tibetan monk in the Sertha region of eastern Tibet on Sunday.

According to Dharamshala based news portal Tibet Express, Phuntsok Jugney, 20, carried out his protest in the town centre near the famous Golden Horse statue at around 10:30 am (local time) yesterday.

“Jugney raised slogans in protest against the Chinese government and also threw pamphlets in the air,” the report said. The contents of the leaflets are not yet known.

Soon, a number of Chinese security personnel arrived at the scene, put a hood over Jugney’s head and bundled him away. Other reports say that he was also severely beaten before his arrest.

Security in the entire region, which has witnessed several protests, has reportedly been tightened.

Jugney carried out his protest at the same site where on November 26, last year Wangyal, a Tibetan student, set himself on fire raising slogans for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Wangyal had his hands clasped in prayers as he ran raising slogans for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and freedom for the Tibetan people near the Golden Horse statue.

Following his immediate arrest by Chinese security personnel, Wangyal’s condition and whereabouts continue to remain unknown.

In India, thousands of exiled Tibetans are expected to gather in the national capital New Delhi to take part in four days of solidarity events beginning Wednesday, January 30.

Organised jointly by the Cabinet and the Tibetan Parliament, as part of the Global Solidarity with Tibet Campaign launched in December 2012, the event in New Delhi aims to express solidarity with Tibetans inside Tibet and raise international awareness on the current situation in Tibet.

Sikyong Dr Lobsang Sangay, the elected head of the Tibetan people, along with his cabinet ministers, and Tibetan parliamentarians led by Speaker Penpa Tsering will be leading the campaign.
