Chinese Authorities offers cash for information on self immolation

DHARAMSHALA, October 25: The Chinese Authorities are offering monetary reward for Tibetans who are willing to provide information on possible self-immolation.

According to US based Radio Free Asia, “Notices, dated October 21 and written in Tibetan and Chinese, have been posted in the Kanlho (in Chinese, Gannan) prefecture of China’s northwestern Gansu province, asking residents to assist police in preventing the self-immolations.”

The police also promise to protect the identity of the informants and deliver the reward secretly.

“Self-immolations have seriously affected social harmony and the working order of people’s daily lives,” says the notice, “The Tibetan people should voluntarily fight against such illegal acts.”

Kanlho Police are offering 50,000 Chinese Yuan (US $ 7,913) for information on “the sources of scheming, planning, and instigating such acts.”

Information regarding the planners of the four recent self-immolation in Kanlho will be rewarded with 20,000 Chinese Yuan (US $ 3,165).

Earlier in October, Chinese Officials offered one million Chinese Yuan to Sangay Gyatso’s wife (US $ 158,599) urging them to sign a document stating that his self-immolation protest was not targeted against China’s rule over Tibet.

Sangay Gyatso, 27, set himself on fire near the Dokar Monastery on October 6 and is survived by his wife Dorjee Kyi and two children - a son, Dorjee Dhundup, 7 and a daughter, Tenzin Tso, 5.

The notice also blames His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the fiery protests in Tibet.

“Recent incidents of self-immolation are a political ploy instigated by the Dalai clique and separatists with the empty hope of splitting the country and destroying social harmony,”

The notice further says that the Chinese Authorities could lead to “timely intervention” if the local residents assist in providing information on self immolation.

The deepening crisis inside Tibet has witnessed large scale anti-China protests and a series of self-immolation that has now engulfed 58 Tibetans since 2009.
