DHARAMSHALA, November 24: After a large portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama along with two Tibetan national flags were seen displayed on the roof top of the Ragya monastery in Amdo Golok last Sunday, local Chinese officials have given a three-day dead line to the monks to turn-in and voluntarily surrender.

"After holding a meeting at the monastery, the local Chinese officials have warned the monks at the monastery to surrender voluntarily within three days," said Gadhen, a former monk of Ragya monastery in Tibet.

"Monks have been severely warned that if anyone fails to turn in voluntarily, the results will be bad for the monastery," Gadhen, who is currently at the Sera monastery in south India told Phayul.

The portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama along with the two Tibetan national flags were displayed coinciding with a religious ceremony at the monastery.

Slogans were also reportedly written below the portrait of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan national flags – items forbidden in China occupied Tibet and the possession of which is considered as acts of subversion.

In 2009, Ragya witnessed popular anti-China protests following the suicide of a 28-year old monk Tashi Sangpo.

Tashi Sangpo’s death had sparked protests with Tibetans taking to the streets carrying Tibetan national flags and chanting slogans such as “independence for Tibet, long live Dalai Lama.”

Since March this year, 11 Tibetans have set themselves on fire, protesting China’s continued occupation of Tibet and demanding the return of the Dalai Lama from exile.
