Tibet Film Festival in Prague aims at "fighting cultural genocide"
Prague Post[Wednesday, April 13, 2011 18:38]
Prague, Czech Rep.: Kino Aero hosts the 5th Annual Tibet Film Festival from Wednesday 13 - Friday 15 April.

The 20 films focusing on the paradisaical yet troubled region of Asia, will cover topics including protection of the Tibetan Plateau and Chinese occupation through the eyes of Tibetans.

Says organiser Micael Synek: “Tibet is a fascinating land, its history and its culture. It has been isolated for quite a long time from the outside world and a lot has survived there which has been lost elsewhere.

“Today, Tibet is still a country under occupation and Tibetan culture is being systematically destroyed. Documenting it, studying it and propagating it is our humble way of fighting cultural genocide.”

Synek hopes that as in previous years, the festival will be both fun and insightful, giving filmgoers the opportunity to discover the same magic that Tibet evokes for him.

“I visited Tibet for the first time in 1992 and mentally have never left it since.”

Film picks

The Reincarnation of Khensur Rinpoche: Synek’s choice of the festival’s premieres looks at a 47-year-old monk whose spiritual master, a revered high lama, has been dead for four years. According to Tibetan belief, he will soon be reincarnated. April 14 at 6

Raid into Tibet: The only known footage of the Tibetan guerilla fighters who carried on their resistance efforts from the remote Mustang area of Nepal from 1960 to 1964. April 14 at 8:30

The Shadow Circus: The CIA in Tibet: The story of an unlikely alliance between the Tibetan people and the CIA which went on during the 1950s and 60s, and was one of the CIA’s longest-running covert operations. April 15 at 6

Dreaming Lhasa: Described by Synek as “maybe the best Tibetan feature film ever”, Dreaming Lhasa is about a New York filmmaker shooting a documentary on former political prisoners who have escaped from Tibet. April 15 at 9

All films will be English language with Czech subtitles. Tickets are 100 Kč, available from Kino Aero
