Dalai Lama offers prayers to the victims of Japan disasters

Dharamsala, March 12: In a letter sent to the Prime Minister of Japan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama has offered prayers to the victims of devastating natural disasters that struck Japan since yesterday.

"His Holiness offered his prayers for those who have lost their lives and offered his sympathy and condolences to their families and others affected by it," a post in the official website of the exiled Tibetan leader said.

"In a letter sent on 12 March to H.E. Naoto Kan, the Prime Minister of Japan, His Holiness the Dalai Lama expressed his shock and sadness on hearing the news of yesterday’s earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan," the post added.

In the letter, the Dalai Lama has also expressed appreciation to the Japanese Government's "disaster preparedness measures", which he said had helped prevent the "death and destruction from being much worse".

Prayers to recite the Heart Sutra one hundred thousand times are being organized in Dharamsala and the Tibetan spiritual leader who enjoys huge following in Japan has also advised the Japanese people to do the same.

"Finally, as a Buddhist monk who daily recites the Heart Sutra, His Holiness felt it would be very good if Japanese Buddhists were to recite the Heart Sutra on this occasion. Such recitation may not only be helpful for those who have lost their precious lives, but may also help prevent further disasters in the future," the post said.

Meanwhile, the GuChuSum Movement of Tibet, an association of former Tibetan political prisoners largely supported by sympathizers in Japan, has said it will organize a public prayer service here in Dharamsala for the disaster victims in Japan.
