Dharamsala, August 26: The city of Budapest plans to make His Holiness the Dalai Lama an honorary citizen this year, according to Hungarian media reports.

The Tibetan leader is a popular figure in Hungary and had made many visits to the country, Caboodle.hu, Hungary's leading English-language news portal, said.

The list of distinguished people who are to be honoured by the city has been drawn up by the municipal assembly in secrecy, but Mayor Gabor Demszky earlier made it clear that he would announce the honour when the Dalai Lama visits Budapest in September, the report added.

The honour is usually handed over by the mayor on November 17, the day that marks the unification of Buda and Pest.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will spend four days in the Hungarian capital from September 17-20, during which he will give Buddhist teachings and a public address in the Papp László Budapest Sports Arena.

According to the country’s media reports, the visit will also include meetings with Members of Parliament.

The Dalai Lama has already been to Hungary six times previously. The last time was in 2000.

His Holiness’ last planned visit in 2008 was reportedly cancelled due to widespread unrest in Tibet against Chinese rule.

China warns countries against hosting the Dalai Lama, saying the Tibetan leader is trying to split China.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner, who is admired widely, has accused Beijing of misrepresenting his position on Tibet's independence, saying the Chinese had privately accepted that he seeks only autonomy while publicly denouncing him as a separatist.

The Tibetan leader also says that his visits should not harm the relationship between his hosts and China, and maintains that the bilateral ties of his host countries with China should take precedence.

Last year, China warned Paris and Warsaw not to honor the Tibetan leader with its honorary citizenship which the Tibetan leader was awarded despite repeated warnings from China.
