Dharamsala, Feb 7 – His Holiness the Dalai Lama will receive an international award for championing the cause of freedom.

National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, has selected the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner for the award that would be conferred on him in October this year.

The 74-year-old Tibetan leader would be honoured with the awardat the Duke Energy Centre, according to Freedom Center CEO and President Donald W Murphy.

"The Dalai Lama's tireless efforts on behalf of Tibet and his life-long advocacy of freedom and peace for all are in the finest traditions of those abolitionists who fought for the eradication of slavery in the 18th and 19th centuries," Murphy, the head of the non-governmental organisation, said.
