Quarantine lifted from Tsegorthang town
Phayul[Sunday, August 09, 2009 19:26]
Dharamsala, August 9 - China has ended the quarantine of Tsegorthang, a Tibetan town where deadly pneumonic plague killed three people since July 30.

China earlier quarantined the Tibetan town of Tsegorthang in Qinghai province after the deadly plague claimed its third victim. The officials lifted the blockade Saturday night after 10 days, said a government spokesman.

Police had set up checkpoints around the farming town of 10,000 people, sealing it off to prevent the spread of the disease that can kill in as few as 24 hours if left untreated.

Nine patients are reportedly recovering and in stable condition though they were required to stay for five days in a hospital for observation. Another 332 people quarantined for having "direct or indirect contact" with the patients were released, according to the Associated Press.

Most of the other sickened people were relatives of the first victim named Kunsang, a 32-year-old herdsman who became ill after burying his dog.

The World Health Organization says the plague is one of the deadliest infectious diseases and can kill patients within 24 hours of infection if left untreated.
