Dalai Lama to recieve "International Freedom Award" in September
Phayul[Sunday, August 09, 2009 16:18]
Dharamsala, August 8 - His Holiness the Dalai Lama will receive the International Freedom Award on September 23 in Memphis, United States.

The National Civil Rights Museum this year decided to confer the award upon the 74 year old Tibetan leader as its board chairman Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks called His Holiness "a living example of Dr. Martin Luther King and Gandhi’s non-violence in the face of political oppression and suffering.”

The award, sponsored by the Hyde Family Foundations, will be given at a function at The Peabody hotel.

The award presentation will be separate from the annual NCRM Freedom Awards in October. The Oct. 27 banquet at the Memphis Cook Convention Center will honor Myrlie Evers Williams, the former chair of the NAACP and widow of civil rights martyr Medgar Evers, and Basketball Hall of Famer Julius Erving.
