The Prince of Wales has discussed the issue of Tibet during talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Charles broached the subject during his first ever private chat with a Chinese leader in the UK.

The details of the discussion were not released by Clarence House but the heir to the throne is a long-time supporter of the Dalai Lama - Tibet's spiritual leader - who is seen by China as a separatist threat.

Charles had been urged to speak out in support of Tibet by campaign group Free Tibet, which had written to the Prince listing a range of human rights concerns it hoped that he would discuss with President Hu.

A Clarence House spokesman described the discussion between Charles and the president as a good meeting and said it overran by 20 minutes, lasting for 50 minutes.

He said: "The Prince and the president discussed a full range of issues of mutual concern, including climate change, the reconstruction of areas damaged by last year's earthquake (in China) and the situation in Tibet."

Charles, who met the president in the exclusive Mandarin Oriental Hotel in London's Knightsbridge, once described China's leaders as "appalling old waxworks".

But his once frosty relationship with China appears to have thawed as he was praised by President Hu for actively promoting relations between the UK and the Far East country.

The Chinese leader said at the start of their meeting that the Queen and members of the Royal Family had all taken an interest in the growth of the relationship between his country and the UK.

Speaking through an interpreter, he told Charles: "Your Royal Highness also places high importance on China-UK relations and you actively promoted practical co-operation between our two countries. We commend your efforts and thank you for that."
