Police question kins of Ragya monk who killed self, 3 detainees identified

Dharamsala March 25 – Three of the four monks arrested along with the monastic prefect of Ragya monastery, Palden Gyatso, on Sunday were identified as Soepa, aged 42; Gyaltsen, aged 34; and Jamyang Khedup, aged 27.

Jamyang Tenzin, a former monk of Ragya monastery who now lives here, told Phayul that they were arrested on suspicion of leading the protests on March 21.

Authorities have told the administration of the monastery the monks are currently held in Ragya and will be released soon, according to Tenzin.

Tenzin added that some civilians were also arrested on Saturday when thousands of Tibetans took to the streets following the suicide of Tashi Sangpo of Ragya monastery. One of them was identified as Yanglo, aged 54, but details of others could not be obtained.

Meanwhile, around 50 people including family members, relatives and friends of Tashi Sangpo were being questioned at a police station located some 2 kilometres from Ragya monastery, Tenzin said.

Chinese troops in strong numbers have been called from Golok and Xining after thousands of angry Tibetans came out on streets follwoing the reported suicide of Tashi Sangpo.

Ragya is divided into an upper region and lower region, which the locals call Yaphuk and Maphuk. Troops have been currently stationed in both these regions, according to the source.
