China censors Obama
Phayul[Thursday, January 22, 2009 00:22]
Dharamsala, Jan. 21: China yesterday interrupted the live telecast of the inaugural speech by the 44th President of the United States of America.

The telecast was being aired live in China on its state controlled television channel- CCTV.

As soon as the first African American president of the United States uttered the word ‘Communism’ the live broadcast was interrupted by the news anchor.

Barack H. Obama, in his first address to the nation as the President of the United States, said , "Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions.”

The new President also said, “To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame the society’s ills on the west; Know that your people will judge you on what you build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.”

According to the BBC, English-language versions of the speech have been allowed on the internet, but many of the Chinese translations have omitted sensitive sections.
