Tokyo, July 5 - His Holiness the Dalai Lama`s 73rd birth anniversary was celebrated at Hotel Okura, a well-known Hotel in the center of Tokyo city. Mrs Kesang Yangyi Takla, Foreign Minister for Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala was the chief guest at the event. Considering the situation in Tibet and the natural tragedies at Myanmar and Sichuan, the celebration was devoid of any conspicuous entertainment effects. However, the event witnessed a record attendance of nearly five hundred people including some fifty Tibetans and foreign guests.

The celebration started with the offering Mandala and Khata to the portrait of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, followed by a brief prayer by the Tibetans. Mr. Lhakpa Tshoko, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama for Japan and East Asia welcomed the guests and thanked them for their overwhelming support during the events following March 10th in Tibet and during the Save Tibet Asia Pacific Forum. Kalon Kesang Yangkyi Takla read her speech, in which she dwelt on the situation in Tibet and outside Tibet, and need for the world community to stand for truth and justice. She said she was happy to note so many Japanese showing support and interest in Tibetan issue.

Other speaker includes, Mr. Edano Yukio, President of Japanese Parliamentarians for Tibet, Mr. Makino Seishu, organizer of Save Tibet Network Forum and Dr. Oashi Tsutomu, a noted Japanese brain scientist. They all expressed their sincere wish and long life prayers for the long and healthy life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. They said that His Holiness the Dalai Lama is a symbol of peace, truth and justice, and the Chinese leadership should learn to see His Holiness more as a friend than as a separatist.

The celebration lasted for two hours, a 15 minutes video show on the life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama since his enthronement in Tibet was shown to the delight of everyone present. At 8 pm Representative Lhakpa Tshoko thanked the supporters and the guests for their presence and continued support. There were some twenty Japanese volunteers to help arrange the celebration.

Kalon Kesang Yangkyi Takla will visit some important supporter tomorrow and will leave for Delhi on 8th July. Kalon was here in Japan to preside over Save Tibet Asia Pacific Forum organized by Save Tibet Netowork Japan to urge the G-8 leaders not to forget Tibet during their forthcoming summit in Hokkaido.
