March to Tibet: Marchers reach their next destination
Phayul[Tuesday, May 06, 2008 16:07]
By Tenzin Chodon

Dharamsala, May 6 - After sixteen days of tireless walking in the North Indian summer, marchers have finally reached Nainital, a town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Nainital or 'Lake district of India' was the only route mentioned by the organizing committee on their march to Tibet.

The 270 marchers who arrived in town this afternoon were welcomed by the Sweater Sellers Association and the Tibetan Khampa Association with ceremonial Tibetan scarves. Residents carried Tibetan flags and cheered the marchers as they made their latest stop. Regional TYC along with the other two associations have arranged for their stay as a gesture of goodwill and encouragement.

According to Lobsang Yeshi, one of March to Tibet Coordinators, they are planning to rest for the next two days. However rest for them does not mean sitting idle but unremitting participation in events starting with a candlelight vigil in the evening. They are also planning on a peaceful demonstration against the repression, continued torture and killing that has been going on in Tibet.

The organizers will hold a press conference on May 9 wherein they will address their future plans and strategies. The march will continue thereon through Almora, a hill district in the central Kumaon region of Uttaranchal located at an altitude of 1638 meters (5,500 feet).

The March to Tibet organized by the five NGO's jointly under the name of 'The Tibetan People's Uprising Movement' resumed the second leg of their journey on April 19 from the Indian Capital after a ten days hiatus. During their first stop they took part in peaceful protests and a 24 hour hunger strike. This shows their unrelenting determination for their goal.
