Protesters gathered Monday in Union Square for the 49th Tibetan National Uprising Day. Organizers stood on a stage and led an audience of hundreds, many waving Tibetan flags, in chants.

Protests happen every year on the anniversary date to oppose Chinese occupation of Tibet. But today, organizers were also protesting the fact that Beijing will be hosting the 2008 Olympics. Members of the crowd chanted, "No freedom, no peace," "China is guilty" and "China lies, people die."

Fletcher Bach, from Burlington, Vt., traveled over 300 miles to attend the protest.

"It's extremely important for everyone to be here to show their support for the Tibetan people in this final hour before the Beijing Olympics," Fletcher said.

New York City councilman Tony Avella was among the speakers present at the protest.

"Let there be a free Tibet," Avella said, before encouraging protesters to vote for him in the 2009 mayoral election.
