10 March demonstration in Poland

Warsaw, March 9, 2008 - Tibetan flags were fluttering today in front of the Chinese embassy in Warsaw. Some dozen Tibetan supporters manifested at the occasion of the 49th anniversary of the Tibetan uprising (1959) against the Chinese occupation of Tibet.

Less than half a year before the Olympics in Beijing, the demonstrators reminded the Poles about the human rights violation in Tibet and China and proclaimed the Appeal of Solidarity with the 5 Tibetan NGOs starting the Protest March from Dharamsala (India) to Tibet on the 10th of March.

The Tibetans living in Poland (about 20) took part in the rally. 'We have a lot of friends in Poland, but need more support from the Polish government', said Dr. Thupten Kunga, the President of the Tibetan community in Poland. The Secretary of the Polish parliamentary group for Tibet, Mrs. Ewa Kedzierska, read the groups Statement and its official Invitation recently issued to His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit Poland. She underlined that last year His Holiness met the most important heads of states, notably the PM of Canada and Australia, the Chancellor of Austria, the President of the United States of America and the Chancellor of Germany.

"We protest against using the Olympics as a political tool justifying illegal occupation of Tibet and veiling the human rights violation getting worst and worst each day," said Piotr Cykowski from the Tibetan Programme, an NGO which has organised the event.

The demonstrators were shouting slogans: Free Tibet!, Long life to H.H. the Dalai Lama!, Free Panchen Lama! An experiment shouting by Ven.Tenzin Jangchub, a Tibetan doctor: Long life to the motherland! was a bit shocking on the Polish ground and not undertook by the surprised rally makers. What Dr. Jangchub actually wanted to do was to draw attention to the fact that His Holiness the Dalai Lama, contrary to the Chinese baseless allegations, is not a splittist, but only requests for the genuine autonomy within the Chinese borders, and not for the independence. Dr. Jangchub, who is a Tibetan lama, also made everybody listen to the Chinese prayers.

The Tibetan National anthem was sung by the demonstrators. The event has been covered by the public T VP 1 in the main evening news edition.
