Dharamsala, December 20: The Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is set to teach management and leadership qualities at the premier Indian Institute of Managament, Ahmedaba (IIM-A).

The Tibetan leader will take a couple of classes at IIM-A in January 2008 and the exact date is to be finalized soon, IANS reported Thursday.

"I think, he will be the first spiritual leader to give lectures to our students. Both the faculty and the students are eagerly waiting to hear the Dalai Lama," the report quoted IIM-A chief communication officer Ashok Shah as saying.

"His commitment to promotion of human values such as compassion, tolerance, contentment and self-discipline are worth emulation and analysis. These are leadership traits and the spiritual leader will help us in becoming leaders," Mr Ashok explained in the report.

The Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, would "help us learn new frontiers in leadership", he said in the report.

"In a management set-up like IIM-A, we strive to give students and faculty fresh inputs to lead in their own area of interest. The success story of leaders, their perseverance and their approach are a learning lesson for us.

"This is part of our holistic teaching method and efforts at making our students think differently and ably before entering the tough world of management," he said in the report.

Shah, who was recently in the capital to meet people close to the Dalai Lama, also said: "I have interacted with people close to the spiritual leader and the final date for the lecture will be finalised soon."

Since 1959, the Dalai Lama, now 72, has been living in exile in the northern Indian town of Daharamsala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-Exile, after the Tibetan uprising against Communist China’s presence in Tibet failed following a brutal crackdown by the communist troops.

Since then, His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, who is being revered by Tibetans as their undisputed leader, has been leading a non-violent peaceful struggle to restore freedom in Tibet.

In doing so, he has received over 84 awards, honorary doctorates, prizes, including the Nobel Peace Prize and Magsaysay awards in recognition of his message of peace, non-violence, inter-religious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion. On October 17, this year, he was awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honour. Similarly, he was conferred the “White Lotus Order”, the Russian Republic of Kalmykia’ highest honour, last year.

He has also authored more than 72 books, including "My Tibet", "Kindness, Clarity and Insight" and "The Union of Bliss & Emptiness", “The Universe in a Single Atom - The Convergence of Science and Spirituality”, “The Power of Compassion”, “Freedom in Exile”, “My Land and My People” and “Universal Responsibility and the Good Heart”.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama travels widely in different parts of the world “to promote human values and inter religious harmony”, which he says are two of his key commitments in life. And, until a mutually beneficial solution is reached between the Tibetans and Chinese, the Dalai Lama states that his commitment to Tibetan issue “to act as a free spokesperson of the Tibetans in their struggle for justice” will remain as his third commitment.

The Dalai Lama’s forthcoming talk at the IIM-A campus follows a similar guest lecture by the Indian Railway Minister Lalu Prasad last year.
