Nepal condemned for blocking 5,000 Tibetans from getting asylum in the United States
ACHR[Thursday, November 01, 2007 22:48]
New Delhi - Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR) today condemned the government of Nepal for blocking 5,000 Tibetan refugees from getting asylum in the United States under pressure from China. The United States has offered to take 5,000 Tibetan refugees but the government of Nepal has been refusing to issue “exit permits” to the Tibetan refugees.

There are about 14,000 Tibetans living in Nepal.

“While Nepal has welcomed the United States to resettle about 60,000 ethnic Nepali asylum seekers from Bhutan, it has been systematically blocking 5,000 Tibetan refugees from getting asylum in the United States. This is a racist practice as the ethnic Nepalis from Bhutan are always welcomed while the Tibetans are handed over to the Chinese security personnel.” - stated Mr Suhas Chakma, Director of Asian Centre for Human Rights.

ACHR requested the US Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, Ms Ellen Sauerbrey, who is currently on a week long visit to Nepal to urge the government of Nepal to issue “exit permits” to the Tibetan refugees.
