Richard Gere Is My Hero hits the screen
Phayul[Thursday, May 17, 2007 12:13]
Dharamsala: May 15: Remember sometime back, the Duo filmmakers, Mr. Tashi Wangchuk and Mr. Tsultrim Dorjee, of Tibet Motion Pictures and Arts amused us with their first debut film, a romantic comedy-"Phun Anu Thanu"?

Following that, the filmmakers also promised that not before long their second romantic comedy, a much more entertaining one would hit the screen too. And the Tibetan movie lovers may not have forgotten this either.

As promised, their second feature film, “Richard Gere Is My Hero” is already out now and the filmmakers are planning to make its first grand public premiere show this Saturday at Yongling School here in McLeod Ganj.

Do Tibetans need proof that they really do love Richard Gere? Go and watch yourself this movie about a young Nyima’s adulation of a pretty boy and his quest to be just like Gere—especially the hair.

Nyima too seems to be completely awe-struck by the Hollywood actor and his involvement with the Tibetan issue that he holds Richard Gere as his idol and his whole imagination appears to be a reflection of his iconic star.

Except aspiring to follow the footsteps of the Hollywood hunk, Nyima seems to be clueless about how to turn his dream goal into a reality. He is like any other Tibetan youths of today and spends much of his day whiling around and creating nuisances in the company of a handful of friends who are equally clueless about their lives.

This film about a four exile Tibetan youths and their daily lives in Dharamsala has a blend of romance and comedy and at the same time depicts the confused lives of Tibetan youths in India constantly caught up in a vexed political situation of being in exile and the little dilemmas that has become a part of their everyday lives.

Artistes from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) and hand-picked well-known actors from Tibetan community share the screen.

The premier of the movie was held earlier at the CTA (Central Tibetan Administration) Hall on 7 May and in the presence of the Kalon Tripa, Samdhong Rinpoche, Kalon Thupten Lungrig and many other prominent government officials. A review screening of the movie was also held here at a local movie hall (Memory Video Hall) on May 12.

The review screening attracted notable Tibetans, including artists, writers and activists. The movie attracted and appealed to the viewers with its Bollywood inspired drama and comedy.

Acharya Nyima, a Buddhist Philosopher and writer, described the movie as “very beautiful and informative”. Lhasang Tsering, former President of the Tibetan Youth Congress, remarked”…In all a great achievement” and congratulated the two filmmakers. Dhondup Gyalpo, editor, Tibet net/ Tibetan Bulletin, feelt that the current film is a kind of Giant leap as compared to their earlier film, Phun Anu Thanu.
