China abducted Tibet’s 11th Panchen Lama, second highest spiritual leader, at the age of only six in 1995 and he has already been detained incommunicado over twelve years. No international agency has either seen or heard from him since abduction. China refuses access to the boy to every international observer whether governmental or NGO’s. Let us not forget that the previous Panchen Lama died at the age of 51 in early 1989 under mysterious circumstances five days after delivering a scathing attack on China’s misrule in Tibet. It was alleged that China murdered him and China imposed martial law in many parts of Tibet for several months thereafter to control the string of protests sparked by alleged China’s hand in his sudden death.
Let us be aware that China, a permanent Security Council member wielding veto-power at the United Nations, is perpetrating this gross violation of human rights and persecution of Tibetans in Tibet with impunity. United Nations is utterly mute watching its own Security Council member unleash this horrendous crime on hapless Tibetans in Tibet. As always, United Nations is blatantly defunct and impotent in dealing with China on violations of international laws. Hapless Tibetans are shot dead “like dogs” by Chinese border police few months back. China explained that border police shot in self defense in spite of the irrefutable proof caught on video by an independent mountaineer who happened to be close to the incident. China keeps on lying at the United Nations and around the globe while not only persecuting and killing Tibetans but also ever tightening its grip on illegal occupation of Tibet. We, the Tibetans, approach the United Nations for redressing but we are told that the United Nations is “a house for the member states and their sensitivities matter.” China can keep on killing and illegally occupying Tibet under the very glare of United Nations without even a murmur of protest from the United Nations whereas Tibetans are refused to get even a meaningful hearing because “the sensitivities of the member states matter.” Persecution and killing of Tibetans, destruction of its cultural heritage, egregious violations of human rights and continued illegal occupation of Tibet by China can go on because to the United Nations “sensitivities of its members states” is far more important than redressing this half a century of crime being perpetrated by its very own permanent Security Council member.
Regional Tibetan Youth Congress of Minnesota with the support of International Campaign for Tibet will be organizing a 400 miles cycle rally from Washington D.C. to New York to highlight the ongoing tragedy of 11th Panchen Lama, Gendun Choekyi Nyima. The participants include Tibetans and Tibet supporters.
On May 14th, 1995, The Dalai Lama recognized the six year old boy, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, from Lhari district of Nagchu, Tibet, as the reincarnation of the previous Panchen Lama. Both the Dalai Lama and Chadrel Rinpochay’s delegation appointed by China were in agreement. Three days later on May 17th, 1995, the Chinese government took the young Panchen Lama into “custody” along with his family.

Date of Abduction: May 15, 1995; only 6 years old

China claimed on 28 November, 1995, that the mother of the previous Panchen Lama , 79 years old Sonam Dolma, spurned the Dalai Lama’s choice. This is yet another strand of China’s web of lies about Tibet. The fact is she had told a leader of the China’s United Front Department in October of that year that she wanted to go to Dharamsala to meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama but she was not allowed to go.
On December 1st, 1995, the Chinese government announced their selection of another boy, Gyaltsen Norbu, the son of a dedicated Communist Chinese Party member, as the Panchen Lama’s reincarnation defying Tibetan religious tradition, undermining the historical and spiritual task of the Dalai Lama in selection, and interfering with Tibetan religious affairs in violation of the right to freedom of religion in Tibet. The anti-religion government of China, whose believes “religion is poison”, is selecting and authenticating reincarnate Lama for the Tibetans. Sengchen Lobsang Gyaltsen, who accused the previous Panchen Lama of being “anti-party, anti-people and anti-socialism”, is made the head of the search committee for the Panchen Lama’s reincarnation. An anti-religion government appoints an anti-Panchen Lama official to search for the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama. This is just the tip of the farce China is engaged in Tibet.
The Tibetan Government in exile and all Tibetans condemned the enthronement of the Chinese selected boy as “invalid and illegal.” Both the European Parliament’s resolution of November 15th, 2002, and United States Resolution (S. RES. 252) of April 25th, 2002 demanded China to release the 11th Panchen Lama.
The riders will begin lobbying for support for Tibet’s Stolen Child in Washington D.C. on April 19th, 2007, and hold a protest in front of the Chinese consulate on April 20th, 2007, before beginning the cycle rally.
Riding through Washington D.C., Philladelphia, Baltimore, New Jersey and New York, they will contact all local papers and educate the local people of the various states raising awareness for Tibet and the Panchen Lama. They will have a gathering at Liberty Hall, Philadelphia where the United States Declaration of Independence took place. The Cycle rally will conclude in New York on April 25th, 2007, with a protest in front of UN and the Chinese consulate.
Gendun Choekyi Nyima turns 18 on April 25th, 2007, with twelve years of his childhood spent incommunicado in detention.
