A second person was killed last month when Chinese border guards shot at Tibetan refugees trekking across the frontier into Nepal. The announcement was made yesterday by Chinese officials.
Kelsang Nortso, a 25-year-old Buddhist nun, was killed immediately, members of the group said. “There was no warning. The bullets were so close I could hear them whizzing past,” Thubten Tsering, a Tibetan monk who has reached Delhi, said. “We scattered and ran.”
The monk was among 41 refugees who lived through the shooting and reached India. The survivors said they did not know the fate of 32 others, including nine children, who were captured.
Footage of the incident, taken on September 30 by a Romanian cameraman on a mountaineering expedition, shows a figure which its narrator says is a Chinese guard firing a rifle. Another scene shows a person in a single file of figures walking through the snow then falling.
An unidentified man near the camera can be heard saying in English: "They are shooting them like dogs." |
