Tibetans Shot and Killed by Chinese Border Police
Norwegian Tibet Committee[Saturday, October 21, 2006 22:13]
The Norwegian Tibet Committee and the Tibetan community in Norway will hold a Candle light memorial ceremony outside the Norwegian Parliament on Monday 23 October between 4 to 6 pm.

The memorial ceremony will start with prayers by a Tibetan lama from the Karma Tashi Ling Buddhist Centre, followed by appeals by (among others) Mr. Olav Gunnar Ballo, MP and Chairman of the Norwegian Parliament’s Tibet Committee and Mr. Gerald Kador Folkvord from Amnesty International Norway.

The Norwegian Tibet Committee and the Tibetan community in Norway strongly condemn the illegitimate firing by Chinese border police at the group of Tibetan refugees fleeing at the Nangpa La pass (at the border between Tibet and Nepal) on 30 September this year.
According to eyewitnesses a Tibetan nun was shot dead by Chinese border police, while another Tibetan was wounded. The nun was identified as the 17-year-old Kelsang Namtso. The other victim was 23-year-old Kunsang Namgyal, who was later captured by the Chinese border police.

The recent shooting and killing of fleeing refugees is a grave violation of basic human rights exemplifying the brutal and systematic repression of Tibetans by Chinese authorities. Similar incidents have been reported on several occasions before, but this is the first time such killings have been documented by video footage and eye witnesses. The video footage clearly shows how the border police shoot at a group of approximately 70 fleeing Tibetan refugees, including women and children, some as young as 5-6 year.

The Norwegian Tibet Committee’s position is that such actions cannot be overlooked. It is very important that the international community is being informed about the ongoing repression in Tibet, also seen in light of the fact that China will host the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

We urge the Norwegian authorities to address the China authorities and strongly protest their actions on the above-mentioned case. We also urge the Norwegian media to highlight the grave human rights violations taking place in Tibet.
