Dharamsala: Wednesday, September 20 2006: Mr. Karma Choephel, who was recently elected by the exile Tibetan Assembly its new Chairman for the first half of the Five years’ term of the 14th ATPD (Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies), today officially resigned from the Presidential post of the National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) according to the party’s press release statement.

The statement cited the busy official responsibility Mr. Karma Choephel has to carry as the new Chairman of the Tibetan Assembly as the main reason for the resignation from the party President.

According to the statement; as per the party’s regulatory rules, the current Party Secretary, Mr. Chime Yungdrung will hold the party’s presidential role from today till the new election takes place in future.

Karma Choephel has been in the parliament for the last 15 years since he was first elected in 1991 as one of the deputies from U-Tsang province to the 11th ATPD.

Mr. Karma Choephel is currently the Chairman of the 14th ATPD for a period of two and a half years beginning April this year before Mr. Penpa Tsering, the Executive Director, Tibetan Parliamentary and Policy Research Centre (TPPRC) will takeover for the remaining two and a half years term.

In May this year, the Tibetan deputies had to finally reach a consensus to share the post of the Chairman between the two contenders, after a deadlock-tie for the post in the Assembly, for a period of two and a half years each of the total five years’ term. Karma Chophel became the first Chairman of the 14th ATPD.
