Media Workshop and Fourth Seminar of ATJ

Dharamsala, September 7 - The three day long “Media Workshop and 4th Seminar” of the Association of Tibetan Journalists (ATJ), beginning from 5th September was successfully concluded today.

More than 30 Tibetan media people participated in this workshop-cum-seminar on media. The workshop was sponsored by KIOS, a Finnish NGO Foundation for Human Rights, and was held at Gangkyi Staff Mess hall here in Dharamsala, the seat of the exile Tibetan Government.

The opening function of the media seminar and workshop was marked by speech deliveries from the exile Tibetan Prime Minister, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche and the Chairman of the Tibetan Assembly (ATPD), Mr. Karma Choephel. Chief Justice Commissioner of the Supreme Justice Commission of the exile Tibetan government, Mr. Namgyal Tsering was also present during the function.

The media workshop and seminar dealt with various topics ranging from Journalism and law, principles of new reporting and writing, Human Rights in Tibet and its reporting, Tibetan language in media and role of media in the Tibetan freedom movement.

Tibetan Review editor, Mr. Pema Thinley; freelance journalist, Miss Tsering Tsomo; Un Affairs Personnel of Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy, Mr. Tenzin Norgay; official biographer of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Mr. Ngawang Thondup Nyarkid were the resource persons of the event.

Besides finalizing of the memorandum for the possible proposal of a press law was also discussed at length all during the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, a seven-member review committee has been formed to look into the details of the already drafted memorandum of the press law. The committee is required to finalise the work before the end of October this year.

The workshop also saw active discussion and healthy exchange of opinions regarding the role of media in the Tibetan community and, the need of a more active role for the same was expressed by many of the participants.
