Tibetans in Toronto demonstrating outside the Chinese embassy in Ottawa, Canada on July 1 when China launched its test run of the controversial Tibet railway
organized a demonstration in front of the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa. The protestors rejected the railway operation in Tibet which began its first trip today connecting China-Tibet through Golmud-Lhasa. The demonstration was jointly organized by Canada Tibet Committee (CTC), Students for a Free Tibet (SFT), Tibetan Women’s Association of Ontario (TWA), Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) and Canada Tibet Association of Ontario (CTAO).

July 1st is celebrated as 'Canada Day' by all Canadians and mark the day with joy and celebration. Ottawa today was filled with people in a festive mood and celebration. However, Tibetans and supporters of Tibet (non-Tibetans) shouted slogans “No! to Railway in Tibet, China! Stop Population Transfer, Tibet’s Railway- Culture Genocide and Protect! Tibet’s Environment” on the day to express anger and sadness against the Beijing authorities in introducing the railway line from Golmud-Lhasa which connects China and Tibet. The Tibetans were joined by two mainland Chinese students from Toronto who expressed their support and solidarity to the Tibetan plight. Mr. William Hou addressed the gathering and said “Tibet issue is not just Tibetan people’s responsibility. Chinese people also have the responsibility and if we work together, we can achieve His Holiness’s vision and Tibet issue can be solved”.

The gathering was also addressed by Chris from SFT-Montreal who stated, “Today’s event is just the beginning of our reaction to the Tibet railway and there will follow many more such actions until the Tibet issue is solved”. Further, representatives from the Tibetan organizations also came out strongly to condemn China’s systematic policy of marginalizing Tibetans as a minority in Tibet and exploit its vast natural resources.

The day was marked as a black day by wearing black armbands. The Tibetans were supported and cheered by people who passed them by honking.
