Edinburgh Students Protest Chinese Railway in Tibet

Edinburgh, July 2: Students for a Free Tibet Edinburgh chapter today staged protest demonstration outside the Chinese Consulate in Edinburgh against the opening of the controversial Chinese railway in Tibet. In doing so they joined demonstrations around the world, timed to coincide with the official opening of the track.

Stanislav Kostarnov from the local university Tibet group, said, ‘Today is a black day for Tibet. This railway is not designed to help Tibetans. It is designed to increase the movement of Chinese population into Tibet to marginalise and destroy Tibetan culture.’

Iona Liddell, SFT Edinburgh spokesperson, emphasised: ‘This is especially pertinent to Edinburgh, as Bombardier, a company supplying trains for this railway in China will be bidding for the tram tenure in Edinburgh in the next few months. We, the people of Edinburgh should ensure that this unethical company does not profit in our city.’

Tibetans and Tibet supporters in London, India, Switzerland, Italy, France and throughout Canada and the US joined SFT Edinburgh in wearing black armbands in support of the international campaign to reject the railway.

Iain Thom, SFT Edinburgh member, said, ‘Today was really successful. The public were very receptive. We were even joined by twenty Irish football fans at one point! We need as much of this kind of support as possible to stop what the Dalai Lama has described as “cultural genocide” in Tibet.’
