Tibetan Selected for National Geographic's Explorer Program
Phayul[Saturday, March 11, 2006 23:32]
Dharamshala, March 11 - The National Geographic's Emerging Explorers Program has selected Dr. Lobsang Rabgay as one of its 8 explorers of 2006. Dr. Lobsang Rabgay is a Tibetan woman living in Virginia, Washington. Dr. Rabgay is an expert in Tibetan Studies and puts scholarship into action through projects focused on education, sustainable tourism, and community outreach in Tibet. She got her doctorate from School of Oriental and African Studies, London.

The National Geographic recognizes and supports uniquely gifted and inspiring young adventurers, scientists, photographers, and storytellers—explorers who are already making a difference early in their careers, the website of National Geographic said.

The National Geographic awards the selected explorers a cash award of U.S. $10,000 for research and exploration.

A network of experts nominate new candidates each year and up to 10 explorers are chosen from fields as diverse as anthropology, space exploration, mountaineering, and music.

The National Geographic website also says that the nominees for this program are required to be at a beginning of a promising career in exploration and their achievements should show a potential for future breakthroughs.
