Doctors of Various Indigenous Medicines Meet for 1st Time

Dharamshala, August 8 - The Dharamshala-based Central Council of Tibetan Medicine (Che thoe Menpai Lhentsog) held a debut meeting of the doctors of traditional systems of medicine of Tibet and the Himalayan region here.

Doctors from Bhutan and India's Ladakh, Jispa and Kinnaur represented the Himalayan region in this three-day conference beginning yesterday.

The chairperson of the Assembly of the Tibetan People's Deputies, Pema Jungney, and the Kalon for the Department of Health of the Central Tibetan Administration, Thubten Lungrig, were the chief guests of the opening day.

During the conference, 20 doctors from various regions will discuss ways to enhance the efficacy of the traditional system of medicine and obtain wider recognition for it.

The conference will also discuss ways to promote better cooperation between the Central Council of Tibetan Medicine and various indigenous systems of medicine of the Himalayan region.

The Central Council of Tibetan Medicine is an independent, elected body of doctors of the traditional Tibetan system of medicine, Sorigpa, formed in January 2005.

The Council works to meet various challenges facing Sorigpa today.

Across India, Nepal and Bhutan, the Dharamshala-based Tibetan Medical and Astro Institute runs 47 clinics based on Sorigpa.
