Two monks detained on unknown charges, one freed in eastern Tibet’s Sershul

DHARAMSHALA, Mar. 15: Two Tibetan monks have reportedly been detained while another has been released after completing a 10-year sentence in Eastern Tibet. The three monks belonged to the Dza Wonpo monastery in Sershul (Ch. Shiqu) county in the Kardze (ch. Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

Anonymous source cited by Radio Free Asia said that Lobsang Lhundrub was arrested on March 9, while fellow monk from Wonpo monastery, Choechok, was detained on Dec. 25 last year, two days after the self-immolation of a Tibetan protester and former monk named Konpe. “The reasons for his arrest and other details remain unknown,” the source said.

Lodroe, a monk from same monastery who took part in the 2008 Lhasa protest was released on March 12 after serving 10 years in Chinese prison.

RFA’s source said, “He had taken part in the March 2008 uprising in [Tibet’s capital] Lhasa, and was carrying the Tibetan national flag and calling out for freedom for Tibet when he was arrested.”

“Because of the current clampdown on internet and other communications channels in Sershul, no word has been received on the present state of his health, or identifying the prison in which he had been held,” the source added.

Like Lodroe, official report by the Dharamshala based Central Tibetan Administration say that 510 Tibetans were sentenced for varied terms depending upon prior political records and without proper judicial proceedings, in the wake of the March 10, 2008 uprising inside Tibet.

An estimated 227 Tibetans died, out of which 153 were identified. Among them, 107 were shot dead with reports saying Chinese police used machine guns over peaceful protesters, while others were tortured, executed or beaten to death and some succumbing to depression.
